SBO De Kans in Amsterdam
De Kans is a special education school for primary school pupils and is known as the Mayor School or H-school; a number of such schools were built in the 1950s in western garden cities. The expansion of the school matches this typology; the new building is located apart and is connected to the school by a glass corridor, which also serves as a new main entrance. The architecture is modern, but attempts to find affinity with the existing school.
A large assortment of rooms was created indoors, enabling many specific forms of education and supervision. The school and school yards between the building parts also offer space for neighbourhood activities and after-school childcare and that way also connect the world of the children to life in the neighbourhood.
