Residential complex Almanak, Utrecht
A landmark in the making, Almanak will take on a key position in Leeuwesteyn. The new Art-Deco inspired neighbourhood is currently taking shape on the west bank of the Amsterdam-Rhine canal, a quick bike ride from the historic city centre of Utrecht.
The building will mark the entrance to Leeuwesteyn at the foot of the Dafne Schippers Bridge, linking up with the important bike route connecting the city with the new neighbourhoods. Arcades, relief brickwork and eye-catching entrances set the tone in a contemporary take on Art-Deco architecture.
The diversity of housing units offered creates a uniquely rich residential community within the project. Much-needed mid-range rental apartments occupy two-thirds of the programme, complemented by free sector waterfront apartments and townhouses. At the foot of the bridge, overlooking the waterway, a Coffee&Bikes community café connects residents with urban life.
Almanak is designed to be a lasting contribution to Utrecht city life. The socially sustainable community will be accommodated in near energy neutral buildings boasting innovative technology. Recycled and recyclable materials are applied through demountable construction principles, raising the bar in circular ambitions. The communal garden is tailored for climate adaptability and high usability for all users.
