Faculty of Geosciences of Utrecht University, Utrecht
New building for Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University. A sustainable, no-nonsense building with character. That is GEO, the new building for the Faculty of Geosciences of the Utrecht University. It is a simple, functional and surprising design. Surprising with its beautiful, strata inspired, façade of different layer heights. Surprising also because at the heart of the building, a feature display case as high as the building itself is carefully positioned to present a collection of geological artefacts and soil samples. Thus the design solution provides a direct link with the background and purpose of the new building.
On the de Uithof campus, the new design for GEO forms an ensemble together with the new GML building and the existing TNO. Together, these buildings create a functional and architectural trinity. They share a common entrance area and utilise each others spaces. This is further accented by the shared imaging such as horizontal articulation, a quiet demeanour and darker shades, which act as a binding influence across all three separate buildings.
