July 2018 - Meeting

Sluisbuurt Inholland, the Green Cathedral

The Green Cathedral shows how the city could develop in the near future, how we can connect culture and nature with each other and thus keep the city livable and attractive. Our design team worked on our proposal for Inholland Sluisbuurt with great dedication, but unfortunately we did not win the competition. Nevertheless, we hope to inspire you with our vision!

The assignment was to make a proposal for the new building of the Inholland University of Applied Sciences in the Sluisbuurt on Zeeburgereiland in Amsterdam. Inholland has the ambition to realize a building that is more than the sum of its parts; a vibrant, attractive and sustainable building where students and staff work together in education and research in a pleasant learning and working environment. A community that facilitates cross-overs between education, educational domains and partners.

The Green Cathedral is the result of the vision of our design team (consisting of Inbo, Stefano Boeri architetti, Deerns en Pieters Bouwtechniek) for this interesting assignment. A mix of inspiration from the Duiker open-air school and the green urban living / working areas of Boeri; an ultimate green and open
building where students, teachers, employees and guests learn and work in living green.

The Green Cathedral is literally more than the sum of its parts; it is inclusive architecture, for man ánd nature. It’s a flexible organism that, like any kind of education, can change and transform over time. That adds quality to the urban space. Inholland as a lantern in Amsterdam that constantly reminds us of
the importance of a balance between human needs and the natural environment.

We congratulate winner Cepezed with this wonderful assignment.
