Campus Middelsee opened

Campus Middelsee opened

The opening of the new school campus in St.-Annaparochie was celebrated with a week full of festivities. At Thursday the 15th of October the representative of the province of Fryslân, Sander Rouwe, and alderman of the community of De Bildt, Nel Haarsma, performed the official opening in the afternoon.

Campus Middelsee is an answer to the shrinkage of population that takes place in this region close to the Waddenzee. In the replacing new construction two schools are combined underneath one roof. The education concept focusses on the Learning- and Working Square, an independent organisation inside the campus and the link between school life and the business world. Thanks to this educational program students can discover which education suits them well in an early stage, they can easily continue into MBO and they even have a bigger chance of getting a job. Regional companies offer intern- and traineeships.

The heart of the design is the assembly hall with related functions, an open space at the centre of the new building, a connecting element in between the adjacent spaces and the surrounding landscape. The high and transparent façades provide the building with an appearance towards the neighbourhood. This openness breaks down the barrier between the inside and the outside and shows the clustering of student life and the business world.

Campus Middelsee was designed integrally. Feasibility, functional, spatial and technical possibilities were brought together in a 3D-model by the contractor and advisors. The result is a healthy and sustainable school according to the ‘Frisse Scholen’-standard, B-class, and with a good GPR sustainability score.
