April 2016 - Under construction

First bricks for district school

During the traditional children’s games on King’s Day, children laid the symbolic first bricks for the new multi-functional district school De Akkers in Heerenveen. They were assisted by Hans Broekhuizen, alderman for education, who had just revealed the construction board.

To get an impression of the size of the building, the 350 children together formed a ribbon around the contours of the building. The new school will be made up of several 'houses', connected by an indoor learning street. In this way the schools will each have their own identity and their own recognizable place. By creating several houses, we also work on visibly downsizing a bigger volume, creating a size and scale for the school that better connects to the surrounding buildings.

De Akkers will be constructed by Hegeman+ and next to the two primary schools will consist of a community center, a daycare facility and a sports hall. Completion is scheduled for May 2017.
