Won selection city hall Waddinxveen
On a special place in the city of Waddinxveen, a new city hall will be located. An existing building, formerly housing a bank and a shop, will be transformed into a new home for the politicians and residents of Waddinxveen. Together with Boag, DWA and SWINN we won the selection with a design inspired by the memory of the place and simultaneously adding an extra layer to the history of the place.
Waddinxveen is located in the ‘Green Heart’, surrounded by moors and water landscape. The typical landscape of the area is reflected in the facade pattern by rearranging the existing concrete façade elements. The circular reuse of the facade elements is a sustainable choice - less waste, maximum reuse - and also gives a meaning to the appearance of the building.
For the interior, we were inspired by Waddinxveen as a furniture city. The council and facility clusters will be placed in the building as dividing furniture elements. The open office environment is formed around these cores into clear zones with different atmospheres. As an incentive for sustainability and the local economy it would be wonderful if the furniture could be produced by the many local cabinetmakers of Waddinxveen.
