Little C wins the Rotterdam Architecture Award!
Residential area on the Coolhaven
Last Wednesday, June 16th, residential project Little C won the Rotterdam Architecture Prize (RAP) 2021. The project was designed by CULD Inbo and was awarded the first prize by both the professional jury as well as the audience. The award ceremony took place in OMA’s Kunsthal museum, where the jury announced their unanimous decision.
The Rotterdam Architecture Prize is a yearly award that highlights the best new buildings in the city. This independent award is an initiative of the municipality of Rotterdam and organized by the Architecture Institute of Rotterdam (AIR).
From the jury-report:
“ … the jury praises the achievement of a new form of high density urban development as most surprising and important contribution. With the increase of land-scarcity development of new typologies of urban developments with high density is of great importance. Instead of high-rise towers that arise in other areas in the city, Little C was developed as a friendly and diverse fabric with fifteen smaller residential towers with other facilities such as cafés, offices and a clinic on the lower levels… The characteristic bridges… not only maximize efficient use of space, elevators and stairs but it also stimulates encounters between the residents. This invention shows the strong synergy between client, contractor and architect. It led to an extraordinary project that reaches beyond program, context and momentum...”
Inspired by ‘the village’ in New York, Little C aims to be a dense urban living and working environment with the character of a village. The neighborhood consisting of fifteen buildings feels small-scale and intimate. Residents meet each other in the alleyways, on the squares, the bridges, the shared roof terraces or the waterfront area. The result is a unique project where urban planning, architecture and public space complete each other. Little C is a new neighborhood in the city that feels pleasant, familiar and timeless from the moment of its completion, connecting the different surrounding districts like a center piece of a puzzle.
Mr. Bert van Breugel, architect and partner at Inbo architects: “With Little C we have transformed a disused location into a beautiful and intimate neighborhood near the city center, Erasmus Medical Center and Het Park. Due to its location on the new Tuschinsky Park (2022) and near the water at Coolhaven, it will become a place which entire Rotterdam will enjoy and benefit from. We are incredibly proud that we have received this appreciation from both the professional jury and the audience of our own city.”
The design team consists of Dutch architecture firms Inbo and CULD who are consecutively responsible for architecture and architecture + landscape design. All of the characteristic bridges, fences and escape stairs were designed by Artist Ruud-Jan Kokke. The client and also responsible for the construction are ERA Contour and J.P. van Eesteren BV.
