Washington Post publishes the contribution of architects of Inbo for the open ideas competition for the Washington Monument.
Last Sunday’s edition of the Washington Post published the finalists contributions to the open ideas Competition for the Washington Monument Grounds in Washington D.C., USA. Jacques Prins, Kevin Battarbee and Egidijus Kasakaitis, architects of the Dutch multidisciplinary office Inbo, are one of the six finalists with their proposal “Monument of Unity”.
In the design proposal the singular identity of the obelisk remains the main feature. The circle surrounding the Monument symbolizes the United States of America as one nation, a heterogeneous population that shares the American Dream and celebrates the legacy of George Washington, freedom and integrity.
We want to create a better understanding of history - a large sky-lit museum and exhibition hall encircling the Monument, dedicated to the person and legacy of George Washington surrounds the monument, giving it center stage. We aim to achieve a welcoming experience - a spatial sequence strengthening the central position of the Monument on the Washington Mall, harmonizing with the past and addressing the present and future.
The distinguished jury representing the fields of architecture, theater, history, journalism, and landscape design chose the six finalists from a field of over 500 competitors. The worldwide competition for the Washington Monument Grounds is now ready for the public opinion to weigh in and for the general public vote for the “People’s Choice” favorites. Voting takes place online, at the website wamocompetition.org. The public is invited to view displays of the six different concepts, listen to interviews of the competition finalists, and submit an electronic ballot. Voting will remain open until the spring of 2012.
